I've never written anything like this anywhere, but I was talking to my youngest son today,
he is 58 years old, and we were talking about what a precarious situation our country is in
all because of power struggles in the three branches of government right now.
Of course, I am not the only one that is aware or maybe astounded by what is going on, but I have been voting in national elections since 1948 and never voted the party, always the man. We have
had good presidents, mediocre presidents and very good presidents during those years. When I
was young, the only President I knew was FDR. He was voted in when I was six, and died in office
when I was 18, right in the middle of the war. I cried, I thought we had lost our “king”.
After he was elected four times, A law was enacted to limit Presidential terms to two terms.
A president has his first term to learn the ropes and try to do what he can to deserve reelection.
There are die hard members of both parties that will do anything to keep their man in whether he
has done a good job or not. But we only have to worry about what he can do to this country for
eight years. Unfortunately at this time, we are seeing what this President cannot do, and he blames
it on Congress or the Senate.
My point here is I believe there should be a National Petition started to limit Senate and House of
Representative terms to two terms each. We now have people in both houses
for thirty and forty years, many for twenty to thirty, and with each term they gain
power. New blood never has a chance to get in, until that new blood is old and maybe
corrupt even before Federal election.
And since we are in such a financial mess it does seem to me that if elected to Congress or the
Senate, you get a pension for the rest of your life and also health benefits . I think
that should not be quite so generous, as the rest of us struggle on Social Security or our small
pensions. I know they give service to our country, some are outstanding, but let them plan for their
own retirement as we have had to do. I retired in 1989 and somehow still
making it, even by the skin of my teeth.
Please don't be angry about this rant of mine, but it hurts to see this country that my
husband and brothers fought for during WW 11, and I worked for the Army as a civilian,
sinking down to a level where we are owned by other countries because of debt, and if
we default, well, you know as well as I do, nothing will ever be the same. I doubt
it will come to that, as always they will pull a rabbit out of the hat at hour zero and
someone will blame someone else, or take credit for the win. Let's take that power
back and give it to the people, Common sense should come back. I can't find it
Thank you, love, Elsie
