Her name was Lola. She wasn't a great beauty but she knew how to accentuate her positives.. She was a fashion plate, or at least she thought she was.
When she got steady work, she had plenty of stage door Johnny's. One of the lucky fellows was persistent enough to catch her interest. He showed up with that smug look, with a few dozen roses for her.. having bribed Rico to admit him backstage. She thought he talked a little too fast, and slicked down his hair a little too much.
He would be more handsome she thought if he wasn't busy acting like he was Rudy Valentino. She actually preferred a tall more rugged man who had broad shoulders... who could literally sweep her off her feet. She wanted someone who was more like John Wayne.
She did agree to have dinner with him. Tony showed up in his magnificent silver Ferrari ... and worked very hard to impress her...
Wherever they went, everyone took notice... It was if he had practiced making a grand entrance with her on his arm all his life.
Over time she started going out with him when ever she could. Maybe it was the fabulous dinners, or being seen at all the right places... but he started looking more and more dashing to her everyday. Tony said often, "We are having the time of our lives."
David Usher - Time of Our Lives
Every eye everywhere they went...followed their every move...and it seemed everyone knew his name. She never ever asked him why.
Nor did she even ask anyone who he was. She was impressed how it seemed everyone went out of their way to make sure they had the best of everything and assumed they knew of him because he was seen with her and word had spread.
Lola began getting more attention in her career than she had before... she was suddenly was showcased. Her name was suddenly first in the billing of the she was in... and then it became even above the name of the show... “Lola” starring in. Her dreams Fleetwood Mac - Dreams [with lyrics]
were finally coming true. It seemed so true, what Lola wanted, Lola got.Whatever Lola Wants- Sarah Vaughan - YouTube
Soon she grew to tire though of this “Rudy Valentino”... as time went on... Sure Tony was loaded... and his attention once was nice Unfortunately, she grew bored with his flowers, his gifts of jewelry and the dinners. It was the same old routine.. and as much as it was flattering in the beginning, it got worn out like an old song played one time too many. She thought, how do I tell Tony our love is on the rocks?Neil Diamond - Love On The Rocks
And with her soaring career there were so many men vying for her affections...
Lola wasn't trying to get the feeling again, TRYIN´TO GET THE FEELING AGAIN-**BARRY MANILOW - YouTube as she never really felt any passion for Tony. He was never her type to begin with. As things were moving up in her career... he slowly diminished in her eyes.
Suddenly Lola “found” she was too busy for Tony. Too busy to have a night out on the town. After all, this was the best time of her life and there were plenty of other “fish” in the sea.
Sadly, she should have looked into just who Tony was. Lola had much more vanity than she had curiosity.
Tony was not someone who took rejection well. His heart was torn out when Lola stopped taking his calls. He felt like it was a total eclipse of the heart.BONNIE TYLER - TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART - Video ...
She had no idea he watched for her when ever he could hoping she would just turn around...
Some nights he would aimlessly drive The Cars - Drive (OFFICIAL MUSIC VIDEO) - YouTube around looking for her. One day he realized Lola had just disappeared. No one knew where Lola was... and it seemed that no one cared. Well at least, no one had anything much to say....
The doorman of her building told him he had no idea where Lola was. Another person he asked said they heard something about a sick aunt up in Poughkeepsie. Yet someone rumors were she had made a trip to Paris and decided to stay... as she found the love of her life. He did not get much out of anyone else. It seemed no one knew.
How, how could Lola disappear on him? Tony thought. He thought when she realized she missed him, she would realize she loved him.
Tony was in his fathers study when he broached the subject up of Lola's disappearance. If anyone could find Lola, it was his father. He was intimidated by his father so he was a much different person in his presence. It was like a he stepped into a much different role the minute he went through the door any room his father was in. In his fathers shadow, he was not just transformed, to Tony it felt like he stepped into a different reality.
His father listened intently to Tony. Tony put more passion into his appeal for help to find LolaTHE KINKS - Lola (lyrics) - YouTube
than his father had ever heard him have. He had great passion and did not mention she had eliminated him from her life.
With a wave of the hand and that well known look his father had, Tony knew to stop speaking even though he was mid-sentence. He knew his father knew. Tony had never even mentioned anything about Lola before.
“Some people do not want to be found. Leave it alone.”Moist-Leave it Alone - YouTube
Then it was over. Eleven words in two sentences said more like a calm command. His father did not say anything more.
Tony knew it was time to leave the study. No further words even needed to be spoken. In those eleven words and the way they were expressed Tony felt like the temperature in the room had also dropped forty degrees. He never spoke of Lola again.
Tony was driving his new flame Angela to meet the “family” on Christmas Eve. He was fairly sure his family would be open to his proposal of marriage to Angela. How could they not see how perfect she was?
As he turned his Ferrari into the entrance of drive to his parents home, his ears picked up on a news story on the radio. On the radio - Donna Summer - YouTube
Though he was not surprised to hear...“The woman's body that washed up on Long Beach Island in a suitcase last Tuesday was identified this morning as the well known “Lola” who started her career as a showgirl and became a well known star. The results of the autopsy have not been released. Police traced the number on her breast implants to identify her... ”
Tony turned off the car radio. He remembered that day in his Father's study. Lola had indeed gone swimming with the fishes.
It seems for some reason there was never any mention of Lola again... in the news, nor was their any public announcement anywhere. Lola's story though, I heard was actually re-written. It was said Lola was a showgirl... at a club where Tony tended bar. It was Tony who was shot and died..... and Lola lost her mind because she drank like a fish.
Funny how the events of someone's life story can change over time... and incredibly so.. Barry Manilow ~ Copacabana
