One of the casualties of getting older is that the days seem to race by faster and faster. The last few months have really sped up for me. I can hardly believe that it's time for another challenge already. I am in awe by the high quality of the responses to last week's challenge. To everyone who responded a heart felt thank you.
Due to my daughter hitting a deer with her car as well as an extra challenging school year my energy and attention was spread too thin to review the responses from last week and the week before. My intent is to do a monthly review of responses to Thursday's challenges beginning the 2nd week of October when we have our fall break at our school district.
At the moment I am more than just a little tired. It is when I am like this that I know that it is time for a silly and fun challenge. I am continuing on my one word theme more or less this week but with a silly theme.
There are a few words that I have adopted and may have used in other challenges in the past but if I have ................ well we are using them again. If they were good enough to use once they are good enough to use twice, at least for examples.
A long time ago when traveling through the great state of Minnesota I heard a one word expression "Uffda" from more than one person. I asked what it meant. I was told whatever you need it to mean. Since then this word has become invaluable to me. Whenever someone says something stupid to me I will say uffda instead of something offensive or harmful. I will use that word when carrying something very heavy or trying to push something or someone immovable. When my mother in law asks me to do something my first word is always uffda. Let her wonder what I really mean. When I moved to Georgia I heard and adopted an expression "Dadgum or dadgum it." Dadgum is used to express incredulity or surprise. You might hear it used this way, "Bubba when I saw y'all trip over Buford the dog and split your pants so that your red boxers with all the little hearts were showin below your big belly, dad gum I laughed so hard I nearly spilled my beer." If this word aint in your vocabulary it should be. Of course it helps if you can say it with a southern drawl. There are so many other words out there like chutzpah that can and should be in our vocabulary. I uh uh I would have a hard time talkin without a bunch of them there silly words in my vocabulary.
The challenge for Thursday September 26, 2013 is to create a post about silly words. I try very hard not to cuss so I suppose I am more open to including silly words in my vocabulary than others but I have to believe that most of us have at least one silly word we use. When I was a young teenager I began almost every sentence with "Jumpin." This may have explained why so many people were so jumpy around me in those days. The silly words in this challange don't have to be cool like uffda they may even be annoying They don't even have to be original. The silliest words in my collection are words that I have borrowed from other people with the intention of giving them back.....................some day. It's on my to do list but not just at the moment. I have an idea that after this challenge I will have a few more silly words to add to my collection..............borrowed or whatever from some very talented writers.
As always for Thursday's challenge any genre is welcome including free verse, narrative, dialogue or any other style that you are comfortable with. This challenge is open ended and a fun one filled with great possibilities I think. I hope that you do too.
I grow more and more impressed with the submissions for Gather Writing Essential. Keeping things simple with few rules seems to be working quite well so we will stay with just a few rules again.
The first rule to remember is to include the word Silly 9/26/2013 somewhere in the title. A second guideline is to be sure to tag it with Thurs WE, 9/26/13, Silly Don't forget to Post your post to Gather Writing Essential.
Last week I was impressed by how well those who posted respected the request to limit posts that were posted months and years past. You have encouraged me to ignore the three submissions from each member per day rule for another week. Because you didn't resubmit 20 posts that you posted years ago, because you limited it to 4 or 5 reposts of those you have submitted from the past submissions, thank you. I am still reserving the right to not approve posts if necessary because of too many postings but am not expecting to have to do that very much.
Lets have fun with this challenge. I have my pad and pencil in hand and cannot wait to add your silly words to my vocabulary.
