If I Only Knew*1 - if “Someone Else is living here”

Josh and Carrie amazed me with how well they would “play” CSI. They always knew just when to warn me when we watched the show when to cover my eyes. They let me know when I can look as well when the gory parts are over. When they opened their birthday gift up they were thrilled. I was sad because their Dad, my husband Tom, had left just yesterday*2 He was called out of town on business.
“Mom, where did you ever find this kit? You're the best! Now we can really can be forensic investigators”.
They searched and I scoured the house from top to bottom. The cat clearly did not want to play this “game” and hid as much as she could. It's not unusual*3. She is a very smart cat.
Each day brought a new moment of “Aha”...and a new discovery. Josh found a lot of prints on the side of my stainless steel refrigerator near the water dispenser feature. They certainly were not my prints... and since I cleaned it after Tom left they weren't his. The kids fingers could not have made that size of a print so, who could have left them?
Carrie found a long blond hair in the front hall bathroom a few days later. After dinner one night Josh found a diamond earring in the dining room near the window in the carpet. I would have been devastated if it was found in my bedroom, but still... it was disturbing.
Three rooms with three clues of someone being in the house. We hadn't had company in ages. With my husband Tom busy with all the international business trips who could have been in our house? And more importantly why? Was someone else living here and good at hiding?
"We found a diamond, Oh what a night*4 this is!" said Carrie.
Josh was excited too, "Would we be rich if it's a real diamond, Mom?"
"It probably isn't Josh" I answered.
I put all the evidence in a large clear zip lock bag and put it in my desk drawer.
It was all they could talk about.
I finally said, “Yes, I wonder too if the diamond earing is real. Let me know if you find any more clues tomorrow. Now go brush your teeth and get ready for bed sweeties”
Josh made a face at me when I said sweeties. He insisted he was too old to be called sweetie."
I tucked them both in bed.
Now I was all by myself*5... so the house would be quiet.
My mind kept going back to those clues in the drawer. I headed for the hall and rechecked everything. All the doors were locked, all the windows were locked and I was just being silly over this. Finally satisfied there was no one hiding anywhere in the rest of the house, I headed to my room to check my bathroom, closet and even under my bed.
It felt good to be in my nightgown. I was so ready for bed. I read a few pages of my book. The words seemed like they were moving around, so I took off my glasses and turned off the light. I was going over the possibilities of those clues, all in my mind. I tried not to be worked up about it in front of the twins. Josh and Carrie did not need to be alarmed. If only I could figure it all out. I had no answers and my mind just would not let go. I needed sleep.
So I got up and made myself some warm milk thinking it would help.
The phone rang and it was Tom. "Hi, Sexbomb"*6
He always called me that in private and it made me laugh.
Familiar funny feelings *7 flooded my heart hearing his voice... I missed him, remembering... he sure did know how kiss*8
He apologized for being so busy he didn't call earlier. He said he had some birthday surprises he was bringing home. He sounded very proud of himself.
I wanted to hear "I'm coming home*9 soon" from him tonight but he didn't say it. I didn't want to worry him so I didn't mention the odd “clues”...
It made me feel better to talk to him... and finally around 2 am I fell sleep. He would come home one day soon.*10 Morning will be soon as well.
I had a busy morning planned....I put on laundry. I made breakfast and afterwards dropped the twins off at school. Then I went grocery shopping. I put everything away that I bought. I stripped off all the sheets of our beds and put them in the washer.I moved the first load into the dryer.
It's just another routine day in the Jones household. I got the mail and looked at the letter*11 that arrived. I went back to the kitchen remembering there was more coffee left in the pot.
I decided to read my book and take a break... so I sat in my chair with my coffee. At one pm I was meeting Rosemary for lunch. Then I was going to stop by the River Deep Mountain High*12 bookshop near the middle school..and see what new books had come in before I picked up the twins.
…...Carrie and Josh were always happy to see me in the car line. They were the sweetest twins … and so bubbly. This is my life*13, and it is so good!
They wondered what clues they would find next all excited to look for more.... I was concerned there would be new ones.
When we pulled in the driveway. I glanced at the long vehicle parked in front our our home. We headed into the house. It seemed strange, finding that the front door was unlocked as well. There was as the odor of that same perfume.. that I remembered smelling a few times in the last few weeks in the hallway.
I opened the door.. and an intruder was indeed inside. She's a lady*14
Then I realized there were two ladies, one with blond hair and one with red.
The redhead rose up off of a chair in a living room and quickly said, “Mrs. Jones, how very nice to meet you” and held out her hand to me.
I looked over at the other blond mystery woman... and I thought she probably came back to look for her lost earring. Both ladies were very smartly dressed even with heels and both were very professional.
I took out my cell phone and opened it up.
“You both have exactly 3 minutes to explain what you are doing in my home... before I call the police”, I warned them sternly.
“Mrs. Jones You were not home so I let us in. The door was unlocked” said the blond.
She seemed so self assured and was so courteous. I was so angry at the intrusion and I knew she lied as I always lock my front door. Oh just Help yourself*15!!
"Why would you break in my home and how do you know my name?" I glanced at the twins not knowing what to do.
The redhead explained in an apologetic way “ I am with the US Marshall's office” she showed me her badge. "I need A minute of your time*16 Your husband Tom has been under investigation."
The blood drained out of my face and I almost passed out.
"We have been monitoring all his conversations here as well as his workwork." volunteered the blond who must have been in my home before.
It all made sense. She was in my home to plant listening devices. Wow...I didn't expect this. Was Tom The man who knows too much?*17
Then the redhead took over the conversation, “Mrs. Jones... your husband was unwittingly used by his employer in some illegal acts that betrayed our Government . We have proof he was not aware of what his firm was involved in. He has decided to fully co-operate with the US justice department. He has made an agreement to testify and all of you are going to be safe under our protection in the witness protection program.”
This was hard to handle.*18
Wow, poor Tom. Poor us. Witness protection. Wow. What? Witness protection, new lives? Was it the End of the road?19
She continued, “ We don't have a lot of time here. We have a van parked out front. We will provide everything you will need." She handed me some paperwork and a note from Tom.
"There are some other people in vehicles parked on this block who will act as escort making sure you are all safe. Everything will be okay. We will bring you and your children to where your husband is now and then we will discuss the plans for your relocation.”
This was the right place, wrong time*20 for this to happen now
I thought, oh no now it's , I who have nothing.*21 Our lives would be changed forever....I thought about it and realized a positive side. At least when we received new names people would stop asking me if my husband was a singer.....
"What about our Cat?" Carrie asked anxiously.
Then the buzzer on the dryer went off.. I woke up and took the book off of my chest. Then I put a bookmark in it and set it aside. It was almost time to leave to go meet Rosemary for lunch....Funny how time slips away*22

It is your twins birthday. You are going crazy trying to find just the perfect gift. Both Josh and Carrie love to view CSI on TV so you find a great crime scene kit at Toys r Us. You scramble to buy it and find there are only one so you wrap it as a gift for both of the kids. On their birthday they are disappointed to find that they are sharing a gift. With disappointment clearly showing on their faces you pull out the “expensive” card and explain that this year their gift was so perfect and expensive that you decided they could share it rather than settle for something cheaper. That brought excitement to their eyes as they tear open the package.
For the next week, they spend hours finding fingerprints and hair samples all over the house. Not to mention other clues for discussions that will surely come at some point. You are amazed at their findings. One thing has you baffled, you pride yourself on being a perfect homemaker and keep it top shape clean so whose prints are those? By the way, there is nobody in the family with long blond hair either! Where did that come from? Hum? Wonder if that is a real diamond earring?
