A prior challenge brought out the most outré, weird, imaginative and magnificent stories I’ve read since TSII. I want more.
This time, write a story, and please get creative, about anything you can think of. The catch is, the story must hop, skip and jump backwards. The point here is to drag your reader in, hop to the next scene (leaving the reader confused), skip forward and then jump back (bringing the reader’s focus back on track, with knowledge of future events).
Here’s an example:
I was telling Evan, my psychiatrist, the event of the day. “It was horrendous. First, my wife yelled at me for leaving jelly drips on the counter.”
“Okay, Tom, let’s hop to the horrendous part.”
“Well, I went to work and smudged jelly on the paper I was working on. The boss yelled at me.”
“Okay, let’s skip to the really bad part.”
“What? You don’t want to know what he said? I mean—he used expletives”
“No, just go back to the bad part.”
“Well, back to this morning, my wife apologized for yelling at me and said she loved me.”
“Hop ahead, Leonard.”
“At work, my boss was called into the big guy’s office for using expletives. My boss came back and he was really mad at me. That’s when he murdered me dead.”
“Tom, murdered you dead is redundant and obviously you aren’t….Tom? Tom! *shake, shake*. Dang, I need to call my receptionist. “Cancel all my appointments for the day and call an ambulance.”
Keep in mind, this is a monitored group and there are only a couple of rules, which are:
Make sure you put this (WWE, 8/21/13, Hop, skip and jump) in your title.
Be sure to tag it with WWE, Gather Writing Essentials, Hop skip and jump. Post to Gather Writing Essential.
I ask that you make your submission(s) by next Tuesday afternoon, but if you're late, just give me the link.
There is a limit of three submissions from each member per day. If you’re extremely prolific, spread out your work and post only three submissions per day.
Put this challenge statement at the beginning or end of your submission so readers will know what you’re supposed to do and won’t think you’re crazy.
Challenge: Write a story about anything you can think of. The catch is, the story must hop, skip and jump backwards.
BELOW ARE RESPONSES TO PRIOR CHALLENGES – WOW! Please let me know if I missed anyone's post and I'll get it linked for next week.
