Roof top seating overlooking miles and miles of wild West Texas near the Big Bend National Park.
Five young twenty somethings at a holey worn metal table. Four have on shorts and hiking boots and one has on short shorts and flip flops. JJ is telling his life story of being raised by a grandmother and a mother who has several children by different fathers. They are all drinking beer in mugs and half-heartedly listening to JJ’s tale.
The hefty Mexican bartender comes back up the stairs to where we are all sitting and ask the 20 somethings if they need more drinks .
Blue headband, black curly-headed guy in hiking boots, “Naw,”
Hefty Bartender,” I’ll bring up the bill”
Girl in flip flops and short shorts gets up to go get her journal down at the El Dorado.
Blue headband, black curly-headed leaves with her.
JJ says he has $4 but can use his card.
The rest mumble.
Blue headband, black curly headed returns with new pack of cards and begins to share instructions on how to play ‘trumps”
Flip flop girl returns with journal and begins writing. She shares with group, “ We left Austin and found these awesome mountains”. “Anything else I should add?”
Bartender returns with the bill. They discuss that he must have charged them $5 a round. Each one adds up the bill and announces a price per round. JJ says, “Well, I have $4 but I could use my card.
Silence
Bartender returns and stands looking at them.
All look at JJ.
JJ takes out his card, “I can use my card”.
Silence
JJ signs the receipt.
Flip flop writes in her journal and reads another line.
Blue headband, deals cards and gives more detailed instructions on the game.
Other girl says, “Should be have another round?”
Silence
Skinny hiking boots with black horn-rimmed glasses says, “We could have another round.”
Bill and I finish our tacos with beef and jalapenos and leave them at the High Sierra Bar and Grill arguing the finer points of the card game. The sun sets over the mountains
