"Is a booth okay?"
"I'd rather a table."
"Okay, here?"
"No, lets go back further away from the door draft".
"Here, okay?"
Follows her to the rear of the restaurant
where she finally stops to await his attendng
to her chair.
As usual he sits down allowing her to stand,
already engrossed in the menu while she struggles
with her coat and finally sits, throwing her coat
over the extra seat.
She holds a pair of glasses against her eyes,
without putting them on and peers at the menu,
although, after years, the menu hasn't changed,
then looks up as the waitress nears the table.
"Hi, what'll it be guys?"
"Oh, hi sweety!, I'll have two double cheese burgers,
fries with cheese and chilly and a loaded coffee,
no cream, I'm watching the cholestral, how's yours
by the way?"
Waitress, without words, rolls her eyes toward the
woman. "And you?"
"Just water with lemon and a house salad with
lite vinaigrette on the side, no onion please."
"Why must you always be so familiar
with the waitresses, one of these days
you are going to pay for it!"
"They all expect it, part of the tip!"
Food inhaled, he leaves a twenty for the order,
a folded five under his coffee cup and runs to the mens
room.
After requesting a box for her salad (no time to finish it)
she slips the five into her purse and hands the waitress
the twenty. "Keep the change!"
The waitress watches as the two leave, shaking her head,
the receipt was $19.26.
"Can't wait till tomorrow when he asks for a loaded coffee!"
The man starts down the street toward an office building,
then turns, realizing the woman was headed toward her parked car...throwing words
behind her like a scarf in the wind...."By the way, I'm not working late anymore,
see you in the morning."
