Bird Nests Checks
When we first adopted our burros from the Bureau of Land management we were required to keep them in a secure coral for one year. Harry Ass and Hillary A. were the best of friends after the long long ride to the Texas farm from the Federal Prison in Helena, Oklahoma where they had been held for almost a year.
Harry was a full on jack and forever trying to to be amorous with Miss Hillary. Miss Hillary did not take kindly to his aggressive ways and bit the end of his tall left ear right off. We did not see this happen but of course noticed the missing tip of his ear.
Several weeks later my granddaughter and I were out checking all the birdhouses for eggs. We opened up a birdhouse door and there was a big Tufted Titmouse nest with the end of a donkey's ear tucked neatly in among the sticks and grass--properly recycled. There were four speckled eggs in there as well.

I stop along the roadsides in NW TX and pick up raw cotton bolls then stuff them in a wire suet feeder for the hummingbirds at the farm. A hummer researcher found out that the cotton nests won't blow away in the strong west Texas winds the mama bummers fly around with the cotton hanging out of their beaks still trying to get a sip of nectar.
