John, not sure if you would be interested, but I recently found an author you might enjoy reading. His name is Colin Cotterill, born in England but has lived all over - he has a series based in Laos after the communist takeover and his main character is a 72 year old doctor name of Dr. Siri Paiboun (called Dr. Siri by everyone) who was appointed coroner by the local government, although he had no idea of how to even start performing an autopsy...his two helpers are a nurse and a "mentally challenged" lab technician - Must read in order - the first one was "The Coroner's Lunch" - I am now reading the second one - "Thirty-Three Teeth" . The writing is droll and clever...

Di. Siri is a very 'reluctant' detective, unraveling little mysteries...The Orlando Sentinel says "A detective as distinctive as Maigret or Poirot"

I do too.. my love of mysteries started when reading Dame Agatha when I was about 14 years old...
