The snow was falling faster than my teeth was chattering. I was sure my nose was getting frostbite, and my fingers and even my toes. I, meaning Emily. Sweet little me, who was driving three hours in this blistering, blubbering snow to mingle and jingle with a bunch of golden oldies instead of falalalala'ing with the sorority girls at the campus party. I knew as soon as I walked in the door, my matchmaking mother hen would jump on me like white on rice to shove me in the arms of the geekiest man at the party, Tommy Salami. That was our nickname for Tommy growing up because he was the tall, lanky, geeky Italian that was always eating those nasty, jerky type salami thingies. Uckkkkkkk. He always came to these boring parties; I think he even enjoys them. What a nerd.
Ok, here I was. Let me brace myself for the madness to come. I straightened my short red skirt and checked to be sure my sequined white sweater wasn't revealing anything that would attract the attention of salami mans groping eyes.
My mother opened the door and squealed in that annoying way she does. "Oh honey, look what the snow dragged in" she yelled in that strong New York type accent she had; of course loud enough for everyone and their grandmother to hear. Way to go mom, I thought in my head.
I drank two cups of egg nog to help me relax and was heading back to the kitchen for a third one or something stronger to help me drown out the boredom. And that's when I saw him. He ran right into me and my glass shattered to the ground.
"Watch where ya going buddy" I screamed, checking to see if anything spilled on my new sweater.
"I'm so sorry Emily, I was just trying to escape from this nightmare of a party before anyone caught me leaving. Are you ok", he said.
I looked up into the greenest blue eyes I had ever seen. "Oh my God, is that you Tommy"? Oh geeze, that sounded stupid. No it was Frosty the Snowman; of course it was him
"Hi, it's good to see you again. Merry Christmas Em" he said.
Boy was he hot. I couldn't believe it was him. What the heck happened to Tommy Salami. This was someone totally different. Suddenly I was shy and stumbling with my words. This Tommy was tall, so very well built and downright sexy. I was shocked to say the least and I'm sure my goofy face showed it as well.
"Hey, Tommy, It's ok, I was rushing myself. What are you doing here, I mean how are you doing?". Great, now I sound like a complete moron. I need a blanket to bury myself under.
"I was just dropping off some gifts and saying hi to everyone before dashing off to a party downtown. You look great. Have a great nite", he said rushing past me.
Please ask if I want to go, please, please, please.
"Hey Em, you wanna go with he asked hurriedly; almost knowing I would say no".
"Ummmm, sure, why not" I said casually. I could see my mom watching us and she winked from the corner of her eye as we headed out. She came rushing towards us and I thought I would die of embarrassment. I knew she was going to say something corny like "Tommy, look how our Em has filled out".
"Mistletoe, mistletoe, mistletoe" she screeched. Everyone turned to face us, to see if he would kiss me. I was blushing bright red, I just knew it.
Tommy leaned in, and pecked me on the nose. Disappointed, I turned to watch the others looking at us then headed for the door. Tommy grabbed my arm, and pulled me towards him. Before I knew what was happening, he kissed me softly on the lips and whispered, "Merry Christmas Em".
That was the beginning of my Holiday Romance.
