Monday Writing Essential - October 8, 2012: Advice
“IT (Information Technology) is not for ME!”
A middle-aged woman in her seventies (today’s 70 is a new 50) was known to make fun of Facebook and generally hated computers, those, in her terms,” dehumanising machines that turn people into slaves of a zombie kind, gazing at the glaring screen, typing and clicking away for hours on end, sighing and cursing when the Master is playing dirty tricks on them.” She vowed never to stoop to anything as low as that. “Computers are not for me, thank you very much!” she kept telling everyone without hiding her disdain for the monster.
Then one day she was asked to read someone’s written work of about 250 pages, on the computer naturally, and give her comment. Since the author was a dear friend, she felt she ought to oblige. Her husband, who knows a thing or two about computers, taught her the basics. He graciously lent her his little laptop, and she would scroll up and down to read the material, write comments on a piece of paper and then close the programme and after that close the computer. That was all.
When after many weeks her work was done and the little laptop didn’t seem like a monster anymore, she reckoned that she might now try to learn how to send emails to her IT–savvy friends. Of course, her supportive husband gladly helped her to get it organised immediately.
The next step was, you guessed it, Facebook. Gather.com followed…
She is now the gazing, sighing, cursing and accursed slave she once so despised.
Moral 1: Be wary of the thing you mock.
Moral 2: Think it over twice before you decide to oblige.

It's a very amusing and amazing coincidence that your article covers exactly the two topics that I wrote about today - zombies and being perceived as a slave to the computer, which I believe is an incorrect perception. I think, rather, we are using the computer as the new realm of exploration.
I agree wholeheartedly with your last statement that we are using the computer as the new realm of exploration. It has certainly connected me to the big wide world. However, I realise I must exercise some self-disipline regarding excessive usage.
