Were/Are you a Louis L'Amour fan? No but my dad and my father in law were. I remember him referring to them as HORSE OPERAS.
What are some of your favorite western movies and/or books? I liked watching the Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns and John Wayne Movies like TRUE GRIT. I also watched GUNSMOKE and BONANZA.
Have you read any books in this genre lately? Not in a very long time but I did like the WAGONS WEST SERIES (FORGOT THE AUTHORS NAME.)
Who is your favorite author in this genre? Why? N/A
What are the main characteristics of a western, along with some not-so-apparent characteristics?
There are usually several gunfights, possibly some cattle rustling, a saloon and a no holds barred poker game. Sherriff is usually trying to prove he can get the job done.
What makes a good western? Well told story that has something for everyone gunfights, a romance between sherriff and the damsel in distress- a la Gary Cooper and Grace Kelly in HIGH NOON.
What would spoil a western for you? Too much fighting and always painting the indians as bad.
If you don't enjoy westerns, what would encourage you to read them? More movies like Blazing Saddles in a book form.
What is the most difficult part of writing in this genre? The easiest part? N/A
