Three Writing Contests For Poetry, Science Fiction, and Short Stories

The University of Wisconsin Press offers the Brittingham Prize in Poetry annually for the best book-length collection of original poetry. The winner receives publication, $1,000, and an honorarium of $1,500 to cover expenses of a reading in Madison. Deadline: September 30.

L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Contest is offered quarterly for new and amateur writers of science fiction or fantasy short stories and novelettes. Winners receive quarterly first ($1,000), second ($750), and third ($500) place prizes, with an annual grand prize of $5,000. The next deadline: September 30.

The Iowa Short Fiction Award is offered annually by the University of Iowa Press for a first book-length collection of fiction (short stories). Winners receive publication by the University of Iowa Press with a standard publishing contract. Deadline: September 30 (postmarked).

I'm all for encouraging and supporting NEW and AMATEUR Writers. It's so difficult to get a foot in the door of being published!

Here are a couple of sites that might help you: Scholarship America, College Scholarships, Scholarship Programs. Some of these are directed at Asian-American students.

I used to follow the L. Ron Hubbard contest, but then let it go and forgot about it.

There was also an "Artist of the Future" contest associated with the L Ron Hubbard contest.

I read that a novelette has a word count of between 7,500 and 17,499.

Ms Lee P. want's me to submit Twisted Shorties to one of these contests, but I don't believe I can. No one (including me) can make money off of this experiment and it's going to be so good, it has a chance of winning.

The Univ. of Wisconsin site said the poetry manuscript must be between 60 and 90 pages and the reading fee is $25 per manuscript.

I don't have, I truly wish I did. There's just no way to complete enough in the time left. I see it is an annual contest though. Maybe next year.
