Except for the allegation that two independent monitoring agencies reported the same high readings, one would assume this to be a military exercise...

How would that work exactly … a nuclear test or accident ?
I don't think they use live nuclear weapons in military exercises, although there have been exceptions to that and even accidents.

I am in that area, Michigan - Indiana border. Russia tried to cover up a radiation explosion years ago. The Russian citizens paid a high price in lives. We already know that we are not getting all the news.

It doesn't appear to be a hoax. I just googled "radiation levels/Minot Air Force Base" and was able to get quite a few links to news reports and blogs.

What is in that area that could cause a big spike in radiation levels?

No one seems to be able to pinpoint that. There were rumors of a dirty bomb, but no proof of anything. I've been trying to verify the story for several days as well, with no real success.

It would be easy enough to track down the source so I'm sure HasMat has done that. A leak from a Nuke plant sounds the most likely but why the secrecy? One would think they would be moving people out of the affected area.

Because this could be billed as a terrorist event and might help Obama get re-elected.

Radiation.net has a report from the middle of last month that there was an alert due to a faulty reading. They say they know it was faulty because two other readings nearby were normal. If there really are hazmat teams and increased military presence, that would appear to be a cover up. I don't doubt they would not tell anybody, but am not sure about this one, yet.

The alert level reading last evening appears to be a false alert from an equipment malfunction. Here is the station's report:
"out of control readings on the GeigerGraph screen from about 11:30pm local time that occurred while sleeping. My apologies to all. I have no idea what caused this. Shut down GeigerGraph and restarted. Readings from the Geiger were in the normal range (the Geiger operates on A/C). All cable connections are tight and not loose. Am speculating between the GFI and USB Adapter and some sort of voltage spikes. The uninterruptable power supply UPS had lost power and had died - a tripped GFI. I am not going to leave the system running while not at home until I can determine and fix the problem."

It almost looks like a cover, since it is used for for firefighting equipment and shows origination in Bangladesh, and Paris, what is this? In addition, the link itself does not work. Well, I wouldn't call it a hoax if several different sources have had similar readings. I would also note that on the website Know The Lies there is a video report (that has been removed/blacked out/whatever) claiming: "This high level of radiation is taking place in the exact same location where 60' trees were recently snapped and earthquakes were recently felt by residents as described in this video."

Now, do you think THAT is false? I'm not so sure. We know that there were blue lights seen in the atmosphere right before the Japan earthquake that caused the massive tsunami. What were the cause of those? Man-made? Maybe. It may be the same thing from Indiana/Michigan. We also know there is a major earthquake being predicted for somewhere near the Mississippi that is supposed to separate the United States physically at that river, for sometime in June or July of this year. Man-made? Maybe.

Of course, if it is a cover up, most won't know it until they start getting sick and dying of radiation poisoning. Iodine, anyone?

There are at least three vexing questions arising out of this situation:

1) If there was an error in reporting the high levels of radiation, what are the chances that two independent monitoring companies would come up with the exact same elevated levels, assuming that the information is correct and that the data was photographed as reported?

2) Why did the government close down the reporting functions of these two monitoring companies?

3) Why was an obvious lid place on any mention of this situation in the mainstream media, despite the fact that whatever the reason, there is obviously a strong need to know on the part of the public?

Mary Ann...If this is true, it appears that Detroit is one of the first major metropolitan areas that could get hit by elevated radiation levels. True or not, there are now unconfirmed reports of elevated levels in additional states.

3) to keep the citizens from panicking while they deal with the mess, assuming there is a mess to be dealt with.

B-52's are bombers. The military has large stocks of nuclear armaments. There have been instances of military aircraft flying while armed with nuclear bombs. It is possible that the containment exercise has more realism than normal due to an unexpected incident. This is not to say that Minot has stockpiles of nukes. I have no knowledge of where such things are located.

They just announced on the radio that it is a Hoax. BUT the ozone levels are so high to stay inside today and tomorrow. Sounds suspicious to me.

I watered almost all of the grounds to wash away the radiation. Came inside and took a shower to wash away any radiation.

This is the first time I've heard of this. I only hope that we get to the truth. Of course, Mitt Romney and the Right Wing will blame it all on President Obama.

And Obama will blame it on Bush.

And a new poll of Americans show that despite all the nonsensical Republican repetitive propaganda most of the country does blame Bush for our problems, not Obama.

Bush is the one who forces tax cuts and two expensive wars on our country at a time when we were already in record debt of 6-7 trillion. I don't think Republicans seem able to honestly process that fact.

Towns and counties ought to be responsible for monitoring radiation levels publicly and citizens and citizens groups ought to be responsible for keeping them honest.

These days we only get the "news", and I use that term loosely, that they want to tell us about or that has no purpose other than distraction.

If for example this was some kind of fallout from Fukushima, or an accident locally, our government has already made it plain they will defend and hide problems by lying, ignoring, threatening media agencies or firing individual reporters.

Folks, our country and the human being in general is going down the drain, we all see it but apparently they have us pegged pretty good in that we all only seem to respond or demand action be taken when there is a big monolithic news and citizen avalanche.

That is why they set up all these fake media outlets and fake science groups to sew doubt among the public - it works well to just keep people bitching at each other and arguing.

We, the people, citizens of the US have to be responsible for our own government and demand that we know what is going on and be involved in decisions. We can no longer delude ourselves into thinking watching the news or expressing ourselves on chat boards is enough.

Whatever our beliefs we have to stick to the idea that the majority rules and that majority ought to be verified. Maybe we have to get rid of the secret ballot for some things, or find a way to verify our votes and others are counted.

I think a lot of what we see and hear in the media is manipulated for a reason using technology and research done and paid for by the very people who are getting screwed over by it - US.

Maybe it was a prototype test of nuclear fracking … the corporations just seem to be going nuts to frack or get energy in the most environmentally destructive way. It's not enough to have the water from people's taps catching on fire … now it has to glow in the dark as well and mutate humans are farm animals.

That's either a legitimate part of this scenario, or a piece of disinformation that took about a week to concoct...It also seems to conflict with the self-described expertise of "foofooing" in your other link...

It is interesting that the Reuters report appears to be the first time any entity close to the mainstream media has touched on the subject...

I keep wanting to attribute the situation to a complete hoax, which would address all the apparent anomalies. However, when one reviews the various reports and the number of sources involved it suggests to one's sense of reason that this may indeed be an extremely serious event, eventually affecting many people.

However, on an emotional level, I'm still pulling for the hoax scenario...

If this is a hoax, there should be laws against it … to wit - yelling radiation in a crowded country is yelling fire in a crowded theater! ;-)
