It's all about May-satwe

The May 24th weekend in Canada is the Celebration of Queen Victoria's birthday. To me it has a different significance; The long weekend has launched many a boat in the lakes, and cottage season starts. So from then until labour day people take to the northern routes and hang back for three days. I live in the middle of cottage country so our population starts to grow for the spring and summer. One very large significance is that I associate the May long weekend with the birth of my daughter twenty-two years ago. I wasn't able to go visit my parents at the cottage because I was welcoming Heather into our family. The one thing I gladly gave up a weekend of fun for. I missed celebrating Mothers day that year but I have had the pleasure of being called mom ever since.

That is so very cool. I would have preferred to see a bit of explanation about what "cottage season" is. I can make a guess but I'd rather not have to do that. When we're writing, we have to avoid using terms that might not be known to our readers and, if we do, we need to explain them.
