The Skinned Umbrellas
(The Skinned Umbrellas came from Julianza Kim Shavin's poem)
The skinned umbrellas run down the road.
Naked.
Night.
Their metallic sighs
make us violent in our sleep
as if awakening has a calm shoreline
and they swing those Chinese paper lanterns.
The shadows they cast on our porches.
How forlorn things can go.
They wrench me out of my sleep,
push me towards the porch.
A bird calls my night name
I never told you.
Night. Naked.
The umbrellas draw their nails on the asphalt.
Now we shall sacrifice our weakest boys
to appease their hunger.
