My mother's wilting dementia
Seared her delicate skull
Left a burned out chalice
That formerly
Brimmed with bubbly brilliance
Luminous love
Enough to sustain
Her six adoring children
This charred vessel
Held only old memories
And cold ashes with the stench
Of fumes from a lifetime of
Inhaling and exhaling smoke
This is the bitter cloud and shroud
She wore to her impending end
While we watched with helpless horror

Prompt: Please take this opportunity to write about whatever my experiences bring to mind. What was it like when you went through similar things with your grandparents? Or have you yet to experience it? When did you first encounter Alzheimer's or dementia? You could even talk about memories of your grandparents. Whatever you'd like.

The only consolation is that she is possible not aware it is happening at all ... my Mother is in the same way & I see she doesn't recognize what she use to recognize ... It is a whole different world, but she is peaceful in it as far as I can comprehend. I miss her.
You wrote a beautiful poem even if it has an emotional edge to it ... the pic is fantastic also ...
Thanks for posting to the Wall of Sorrow on The Triple Name Club where it's now featured.

My mom was diagnosed with incipient Alzheimer in early 2000...she was preparing for it bravely and would ask people's forgiveness if she forgot something and would explained why...yet, years passed and the disease never did completely manifest itself. We, her children and family, agreed she had some form of age developing dementia but it certainly was not Alzheimer...or at least not like any other Alzheimer patient we had known. She lived until December of 08 and she still and very lucid periods where she could perfectly recall not only long ago memories, but current situations...and she never forgot who we were or our names...except to call my brothers' by each other's names and my sister and I by each others' names....but she did that when we were growing up too!
