The Latch Key Wife is a short-story, though inspired by an actual incident; the story is completely fictional.  The story deals with an often overlooked aspect of spousal abuse - unlawful imprisonment.  In part 4, we begin to see how the lives of two women become intertwined.  Part 1 Part 2 Part 3

Trina closed the notebook.  The writing was wild, almost frantic at times, then, there were days, when it was calm.  The handwritten pages went on and on about the verbal, emotional, and physical abuse that this woman had suffered during her marriage.  Trina wiped the tears from her eyes and opened the notebook to read more.

“Are you reading that trash again?  I have half a mind to throw that crap out.”

“Please don’t.  It’s interesting.”  Trina pled with her husband to allow her to keep the notebook.  There were others, but, she chose not to tell him about them when she witnessed his reaction to one.

“Just keep that mess out of my sight.  Come on, Trina.  Stop acting stupid over some notebook written by a woman who was probably crazy.”  Rick slammed the refrigerator door shut.

Trina tucked the book in the back of her dresser and tried not to irritate him anymore that night.  Over the course of the next few days, she completed reading the notebooks that she found hidden away in the what is now, their washroom.  That is probably what the previous owners used it for, too.  That is probably why the notebooks were hidden here.
