Meandering round gather, picking up prompts, reading wonderful stories from friends and strangers alike, and enjoying the trip, I found last week's Saturday Writing Essentials prompt and it fitted what I'd just written. So, here's some hints (or 25-word drips) about the true romance of my Gran and Granddad.
“Are you old enough?” “Yes,” said the boy, lying of course, so they sent him to war. The girl he loved had answered him no.
“Are you clean enough?” “Yes,” said the young man, lying of course. Mother washed him in lye. She’d given his clothes away. “Knew you’d die.”
“Are you willing enough?” “Yes,” said the lover, telling the truth, replacing the other who’d died. To be at her side was all he desired.
“Are you happy enough?” “Yes,” said he and came home to his wife every night, never speaking of what went before, or of the war.
