My Son is a Teenager

My son is too cool and wise to listen
To my mindless singing:
   Now it’s time to wake up, wake up, wake up
   Now it’s time to wake up with wide eyes
He rolls his eyes at me and cringes

But I have heard him singing
Silly songs of like nature
To the dog

I love the last three lines. I can really see a teen doing this, eyes down at the dog's face, crooning something silly to his fur friend.

I love it. Several poetry forms call for the last line to be an unexpected clincher, and this one certainly does just that.

We are both in tune. You might have heard me read a poem or two on youtube and I have one video here on Gather. So you know how my voice sounds. Son is even finer; his father has a beautiful voice.

Too wise to listen
not too wise
to demand
they rave and rant
as only they can;
years roll on
worries soon gone

Wow, you just made me realize it's been six years since I've had a teenager. Hmm, don't miss the experience at all.

LOL...I sing silly songs or change words to song aimed at both my kids. I think over the years they've just come to accept it, as long as I don't do it when they're friends are around.

man do I ever understand this poem having had 2 boys go through teen years. Actually my youngest is at the tail end turning 17 Dec 31st.
