I will try to edit it again later.
You are sneaky. I did not know you were here. At one point today, you couldn't even get into Gather. I was really concerned. I called my daughter in SC and she couldn't get on either.
YOu can ask Patricia questions now if you want too. She will answer them during the live chat.
Sally--you've got a mini-dachshund army! :)
April--When we adopted Mal, he had already been named by his previous owner--loved the coincidence, though. Racing greyhounds make really great pets. They're not hyper like most people assume. One cool thing you can do with most of them is get access to their pedigrees online. I know more about my dog's family tree than I do my own, lol! (If you click on the link, the photo was when he first came off the track--he's gained a nice amount of weight since then.)
On Kindle I also have short writing guides on character and setting development, and I have plans to eventually turn that into a full-length how-to book sometime in the future. I'm still learning new things everyday, and I try to pass on things in free articles whenever possible.
Patricia, tell us your thoughts on ebooks. If we choose to go that route do you think we can still sell our books to a large audience?
I lost my internet for an hour earlier. Finally got it back.
Got my new posts up on my spotlight now. Finally.
And, will be writing later, I hope.
It's sad that I have to work tomorrow though. Sigh.
I'm looking forward to the chat tonight! Hopefully all the technical issues will work out for everyone. Here in Knoxville, TN, we've had severe storms the past few days that knocked out power for over 100,000 homes at one point. Right now there are utility crews taking down fallen trees all over the city and trying to get everything fixed. So if I suddenly stop responding in the middle of the chat or something, that's likely the cause. (I do have an Android phone, but I think there would be a slight lag in my response time...)
Thank you so much again for doing this, Connie. You are awesome, and I'm very grateful for the amount of hard work you put into these chats and your Today on Gather posts. :)
I'm going to wait on answering questions until the chat starts, but if you're unable to make it feel free to leave a comment early. I promise I'll still answer you.
See you in about an hour...
Get those questions ready! You have a chance to win a free book. All you have to do is join in the chat for your chance at winning.
This will be a great chat. Patricia has published several books. She started her writing career online.
She is a wealth of information and loves to share with others.
(Sean did say he thought the title sounded familiar but didn't know why till I said it was a classic)
I have never read or viewed the movie.
though I hear you thought Spiderwick Chronicles were scary...hmmm...
How did I miss you??? You sneaky gal. I did not even welcome you. I hope you are not in your room crying because I failed to make you feel welcome. :)
Welcome Veronica!
I am so glad you were able to make it to the chat. It is always good to see you.
Since she didn't make last night's chat I was glad to see her here tonight :)
Will you go check on her and take her some tissues. :)
I would like to thank each of you for attending this chat tonight. Just get comfortable and have fun chatting. The time goes by rapidly in these chats. This chat will last for one hour.
Welcome to the live chat with Author Patricia Gilliam

Welcome Patricia!

We do always have a lot of fun at these chats and learn so much about each other. It is a great way to pull authors and readers together.
You feel asleep???? LOL Shame on you.
Are you pregnant? Those are the symptoms, you know?!? LOL
LOL - no worries there, I was "fixed" over 12 years ago ;)
I am so glad you could make it.
What are your thoughts on e-publishing versus "old fashioned" books?
My husband has been doing a lot of research on it and he has found that a lot of authors and publishing companies are going more toward e-publishing...is it just a sign of the times?
I am so glad to see you. The Today post will be submitted later tonight. :)
Yeah Roni...we need to work on that book...
I mean if you are reading a book and you only have a couple chapters left, you have to carry two books with you to the Drs office. With eReaders, you only need to carry one light and small eReader with all your books on it.
I remember all the people saying they were too bulky and expensive and would never take off. I had faith they'd get better.
I have a Sony eReader and I love it. The only problem I have with it is that the battery does not stay charged as long as they say it does. Even if I don't use it for a week, the battery goes down.
I love it so much I got my husband one as well.
Any eReader is awesome tho. Imagine all the paper, fuel for shipping volumes of books... we are saving the planet, one book at a time ;p
It is so good to see you! Welcome! You will just love Patricia, she is a wealth of information.
Ask her anything, you always wanted to know about writing online, novels, finding a publisher or anything else. :)
So I don't lose anyone, I'm going to start up at the top at the earlier questions then work my way down. Hope that's all right.
I’m curious about how you come up with names for your characters. There are many sites that discuss this and many writers still struggle with that. What works for you?
It is so good to see you. Patricia, like you, is a wealth of information. She loves to share too. You two have a lot in common.
http://www.kleimo.com/random/name.cfm
I don't go for the first names that pop up but instead run it several times--using it as a prompt until I come up with a name I like.
With the aliens in my series, I've tried to do names that are unique but still easy to recognize. Even though it's explained that Hannarians have much longer names in comparison to humans, nicknames get used. I've tried to read a few sci-fi books where the names get confusing, and I think it does harm to the story and kicks readers out of it.
I think Greg used a random word generator as well one day for his prompt. It was fun.
You seem to be attracted to the some of the same authors I am.
I like to read books in a series. I hate to wait a year for the next volume to come out though. That just drives me crazy
It is so good to see you. Gather is acting up this week so we are all just doing the best we can to adjust. :)
I really am sorry that I missed your entrance. I hope you felt welcome. :)
it's cause we look so much alike you didn't notice her ;)
It is so good to see you.
Patricia is a great source of information. She started her writing career online. Now she has published books.
I always miss you when you are not here. Have you ever considered publishing your writing? Patricia could share tips with you that she has used. I know you are talented.
Patricia has tons of helpful tips on her web site. She has also shared a lot in the gather community.
The Writing Essential group is a great place to start. I will be hosting live chats with the WE member editors soon. You don't want to miss those chats either.
I do use outlining to a certain extent--I know the overall plot from the very beginning and try to think 2-3 scenes/chapters ahead as I'm working on a particular chapter.
Jeanette,
You will find out soon, just how tired your fingers get during these chats. LOL
You gotta admit. . . . you loved it!!
Now it's our turn to wear Patricia out >;p
Why do you choose to work in this genre? Do you consider yourself a genre writer, or do you want to try other modes?
Even with what I see as almost a "coat" of aliens and fun gadgets, a good sci-fi story needs to have a very human core to it. The physical and cultural differences are still there, but I wanted to write Jernard and his family as being influenced enough by us that they're more human in their thinking but still have to deal with problems hitting them from both sides--humans still not trusting them and their own people questioning their loyalties. You have situations where they're trying to do right but make mistakes--and there's not an immediate solution to fix the issue.
Gather is having problems today. Well, I think they have had problems all week but today it was/is bad.
You know a bit about the problems with gather during a chat too. :) I am glad to see you here tonight. How did you like your chat last night?
It's kind of weird and counter-intuitive, but letting readers have free access to my rough drafts of my current book has resulted in sales of the previous ones. (I think it's the equivalent of catching a TV show in mid-season and wanting to catch up on what's happening.) When I finish a core rough draft, I do take the majority of it off-line for editing--maybe leave the first four chapters for people to preview.
In between book chapters I do short projects and articles and link my Amazon author page at the bottom. Right now my husband and I are in the planning stages of a larger website where I can do more with my series and how-to's, and I'm very excited about growing into that. In addition to Gather, I'm active on Writing.com (started out with them in 2006) and just starting out with Wattpad (which has an app where people can download chapters to their smartphones and tablets--pretty cool concept.)
Once I finish my current book, I'm in contact with a very nice radio DJ here in Knoxville that's going to feature the series in her book club. I found her through a speaking event David Baldacci was having--learned a lot from him, too. I haven't really explored a lot of writer's conferences yet, but I try to keep a look out for local events where I can learn and make friends with similar interests.
Facebook and Twitter can be helpful tools in small doses. I don't bombard people with book posts everyday, but if something like this is going on I let my friends know.
There's also a book I came across called Guerrilla Marketing for Writers (the newer 2010 one) that's really helpful. I accidentally left the first copy I bought on a plane and thought it was worth buying again--can't really say that on every writing guide I've ever bought.
I think the biggest challenge I've had is just learning to get out of my comfort zone. I think most people--myself included--are repealed by the idea of someone trying to hard-sell them. In response to that, I've had a tendency to go the other extreme and keep my mouth shut during times that could have led to a good opportunity for me. There's a balance to it, and I think it just comes down to recognizing opportunities and being prepared.
Welcome! I am so glad you were able to make it. Patricia is a wealth of information and loves to share it.
She always adds links to the end of her posts.
I believe that God puts unique gifts and dreams into people, and in my case I had several wonderful teachers that encouraged me to develop it. I think if you're passionate about any dream, you should try to pursue it to greatest extent you can. That's part of what keeps me motivated.
I mentioned some of my favorite fiction authors above, but I'd also like to add some of my favorite non-fiction authors--Dave Ramsey, Dan Miller, and most recently Jon Acuff. Quitter is really helpful if you want tips on transitioning from a day job to a writing career (or any dream career that takes time to develop).
Welcome! It is so good to see you here tonight. Patricia is great. She is knowledgeable and loves to share
You are not having problems with Gather tonight? You must know someone way up on the chain! LOL
Did you notice this post has zero views. LOL
Go to Patricia's posts and you will find her stories. She adds the link to previous chapters in each post so it is easy to follow her stories.

Answers to Brian's questions:
I think I loved writing from the moment I figured out how to do it. My parents have footage of me showing off my first books when I was around four--given they were half-folded sheets of copy paper with dramatic plots like "Flower" and "Butterfly." I did my own illustration work, too.
As far as publishing, it was more a series of smaller decisions as opposed to one defining moment. I knew I wanted to publish Out of the Gray when I first started it, and I started researching different options as a break between chapters.
Some of them may be slightly older versions compared to what's in the ebooks, but I also have a few rough draft chapters from books 1-3 posted for free by clicking here.
Sally, I am so glad you made it back from Bible study in time to join the chat. Welcome!!
That question always enters my mind when I read a fictional story. I am glad you ask it.
Also, as a reader, do you prefer to read the same genre as you write or something different? And have you ever found your writing being influenced by the style of any author you might be reading while working.
I am really glad to see you here. My husband is a big Sci-fi reader. Do you enjoy this genre?
I'm more likely to read sci-fi if it invovlves killer aliens or science gone wrong, than if it focuses a lot of space travel.
I recently read a young adult novel called "Living Hell" by Catherine Jinks about people living on a space station which is evolving into a living creature, and them trying to survive the transformation. Thats the type of sci-fi novel I can sink my teeth into.
I read a little of everything, but I usually won't read fiction and write a chapter in my own book on the same day--just because of having to make a mental jump from one fictional world to another slows me down.
I have some killer aliens caused by science gone wrong (the Liozi and Liozi virus)--Legacy has the introduction into that part of the story, but there are still some unanswered questions that are going to be addressed in a future book.
Except for, when do you find time to write?
Do you set aside some time? Or wing it?
I am always glad to see your icon. :)
For the most part, I wing it. I like writing either very late at night or early in the morning--less distractions. Something that also helps is keeping notes and ideas throughout the day, so when I do have time I have a rough plan of what I need to get done.
Thanks for the question! Looking forward to your author's chat, too! :)
I'm glad you like to see my icon. He, he..
Patricia, thanks so much for answering my question. I never set aside time to write. Goodness, with two kids, it's near impossible. He, hee.
It is so good to see you. Did you notice that Patricia started her writing career online? I bet she could give you some tips to help you get started publishing your stories.
I started writing online in 2006. Before that was mainly creative writing projects in school.
Thanks for the questions, Lynda! :)
It has actually started to get quicker tonight. At one point today, you could not even get onto the site.
I have a question. You stated that you started your writing career online as a content writer. Is there a particular site that is "new writer" friendly?
Can you give us tips on how to go about finding a place online to get our work published?
What are your favorite sites to share with?
I notice your stories are available in eBook form. Do you sell more eBooks than you do paperback?
I love all the tips you share on your blog. You are such a terrific lady to share all your knowledge with us. Thank you for that.
If you're looking into ebooks, Amazon and Barnes & Noble both have direct publishing options. I've had a good experience from Lulu.com, too.
In addition to Gather, I recommend Writing.com for fiction writers.
In my case, about 90% of my overall sales are ebooks. Only 10% are paperbacks. This has changed very quickly--within the past year.
I'm happy to help other writers as much as I can--the same was done for me when I first got started. I like the concept of pay-it-forward. :)
The Gather writing group is a welcoming group for new writers. I hope you will check the daily prompts and submit some of your writing. I would love to read it.
I will be hosting live chats with the Gather Writing Essential member editors soon. It will be a great way for you to feel more at ease, sharing your writing within the group.
I wish there was an easier way around it, but I've found that taking action--even if it's just a tiny step in the right direction--is usually the long-term way to overcome it. You don't have to make big leaping risks when a series of smaller choices will get you to the same place.
There are only 15 minutes left in this chat. Make sure to get your questions posted before it is too late.
Question: Patricia, is acquiring an agent useful for an aspiring writer?
Take care,
Chris
I am so glad you were able to make the chat. You will find Patricia to have a wealth of information and she loves to share.
I'm not against agents by any means, but I've made money just focusing on my writing and performing marketing functions on my own. I'll probably get some form of representation when this reaches the stage where I can't manage it on my own, but I don't spend my time trying to chase down agents.
That's just my personal viewpoint with my situation. I'd recommend running this question by other authors, too--they may have a lot more detailed info than me.
Thanks for the question!
There are only 5 minutes left in this chat. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each of you for attending. Thanks for all your questions. Hope each of you have a wonderful night.
I'm HERE.
{{{{{ HELLO }}}}}
It is so great that you share so much of your experience with us in the Gather community.
Drum Roll Please!!!!!!!!
April H.
You just crack me up. Is things going better for you now? You seem in a better mood.
Please email Patricia with your regular snail mail address as well as you regular email address. She will see that you get your book, ASAP.
I do hope you will do a book review and send me the link. I will spotlight it in the Today on Gather post.
I am glad you made it too. I miss seeing you around. Good to see you. :)
You can always help the authors in these chats by purchasing their book or by asking your local library to get them for you. I am sure the authors will appreciate it.
I know how hard it can be. I would have normally posted the chat post the night before but like you, the power went off. These freak storms are wicked this year.
Gather has been acting up and at one point, I could not even get on gather today. I was starting to panic. :)
You just take your time. People usually stop by for a couple days after the chat and still leave questions. :)
You are doing just fine.
its taking a lot of effort on your part... just wanted to say "Thank You."
take care,
Chris
I am really glad you were able to make it to the chat. This is the same format I will be using when I host the WE editor chats.
I missed you! I will be posting my review of your book a few days before your live chat. That seems to work well at getting the excitement started for the chat. :)
I did miss you. I figured you still could not get on the net. Glad you are able too.
I am so sorry you were not able to catch the chat in action. We always have a great time, while sharing and learning from each other in these chats.
