She knew it would soon
Begin all over
Again, the door slam
Echoed; the windows
Rattled; the air had
The scent of danger;
Her scared skin tightened,
The dark eyes widened,
She waited; listened;
Sensed his slow approach,
The footfall on stairs;
The cruel cough, the curse;
The scary singsong
So soon forgotten,
The closed-door waiting
To be opened; she,
Standing by her bed,
Holding her hands tight
In desperate prayer,
Knew it would begin
Again: the harsh words,
The rain of brute blows,
Bruised bones, broken nose,
And not far away
The birdsong of day.
