"I won! I won!"Â I shouted out from my computer as my husband was walking by what we call 'the computer room'.
"What'd you win?"Â He paused to ask.
"The First Line Short Story contest!"Â I told him, beaming.
"No, but what'd you win?"Â He asked.
"Oh, nothing. I just won first place, isn't that great?"
He looked puzzled. "No prize?"
"Yeah, but you don't understand! I got first place!"
He still looked at me as though he were waiting for me to tell him the reason I was excited.
"Don't you see?"Â I asked.
When he shook his head with a kind of 'you might be crazy' look on his face, I tried again.
"Really great writers entered their story, too."  I explained, slowly and patiently. "So that's my prize.  To know that my writing must have been pretty good. I beat out some other writers who, I know, are excellent."Â
"Oh." He said, nodding. I still got the feeling he was merely humoring me as he walked away.
I don't care. I know what it means. I'm ecstatic!
