Hard Cover Book or Soft Cover Book Survey

Hello all Gatherers,

 Let me introduce myself: My name is Lishone and I am the CEO of ZLS Publishing, a publishing company located in Albany, NY. 

 Currently, we are working on a book project which is in the cover design process and there is a little debate going on as to whether or not to publish the book in hard cover of soft cover design.

 The author of course could care less and feels it is entirely up to us. 

How I feel-we'll I'll tell you about that later...

Anyway, I want to know everyone's opinion.

Which would you prefer: A hardcover, softcover, or you don't care as long as the book is good!

I'd have to agree with you regarding the smaller paperbacks. I don't like them either, something about them makes the book look chessy. The cover is to bright, the books to small, and if you have a big bag, the book can get lost in it. Thank you for commenting!

My own paperback out is $9.95. Now that's affordable. Hard cover can be crazy. Only if it's a special "coffee table" book will I consider a hard cover.

I prefer paperback. That way I can carry it. Hard cover are expensive too.

I buy hard cover books on occasion, but most of the time I wait for a book to come out in soft cover.

5 softcover to 0 HardCover.
Funny, when you study the publishing industry, they tell you that you need to publish your books in Hard Cover because readers respect hard cover books more than soft covered books! This survey is proving just the opposite. People seem to prefer soft cover over hard cover. Maybe, it's time the publishing industry starts asking the public!

I'll vote for hardcover- I love holding a nice quality book in my hands....but paperbacks certainly have their place, too! As long as its a good book, it doesn't matter much how it's packaged....but I don't like that supermarket fiction size paperback either.

I frequently carry books I'm reading with me. I prefer the paperbacks.

My vote is for both. Here's why. Harcover books will hold up better in the library system and are preferred. Releasing in hardcover and then softcover increases the lifespan of the book by up to two years. Having said all of that, I decided to release my book in softcover only based solely on the economics of printing.

I actually prefer "hardcover" if given a choice myself.
I usually keep my books forever it seems, and the softcovers get deformed, bent, etc. too easily. I also just plain like the "feel" of them I guess...?

I agree w/ Bill F. -- medium-sized paperbacks are my favorite... seem to hold up better than the smaller paperbacks!

Okay, we've got a few for hardcover but it still seems that softcover is in the lead. Come on hardcover folks, we need your voices out there!

My thoughts:

I buy hardback when they are on sale at a cost equivalent to a paperback or softback. The reason: I donate my books to the library and they last longer.

I prefer paperback or soft cover. The paperbacks are easy to carry around and read anywhere. Some of the softbacks are as large as bookclub books so they tend to be bulkier, but I still prefer them to hardback...

Bottom line...I usually buy by author...and wait for the paperback/soft cover unless I'm a member of a book club at the time...

Now...how about paper???
